Case Study: Hamilton Island Resort

Hamilton Island Resort is a world class tourist destination located in the Whitsundays of the Great Barrier Reef. The island stretches over 5.5 square kilometres and is host to over 600,000 guests annually.

Facing increased concerns with an ageing analog radio system, the Hamilton Island operation sought to upgrade their existing systems to a digital alternative.

The communication solution needed to incorporate over 30 channels for the island’s numerous operations whilst being linked to enable the use of single island-wide emergency network without any black out spots.

A discreet radio profile was envisioned due to the customer-facing nature of the resort’s operation, and abackup power supply became a key criterion in the event of a system outage.

Natural terrain, such as the hilly landscape and large bodies of water would require multiple repeater sites as deterrents to wireless communication.

National Wireless Solution

Having installed the previous analog radio system, National Wireless was approached to update Hamilton Island’s communications system. In a matter of weeks, our technicians installed 4 repeater sites offering multiple redundancies and extended coverage.

National Wireless made use of Hytera RD982S Repeaters, chosen for their efficient spectrum and repeater diagnostics, allowing Hamilton Island to operate over 30 channels on reasonable licensing costs and a backup battery system in the event of a black out. This solution would allow Hamilton Island Resort to link their communications network in the event of an emergency – island-wide coverage on a single channel.

We utilised DMR Handsets due to their small form factor and digital display screen which efficiently displays the user’s operation channel. The noise cancellation feature of these lightweight radios ensured crisp audio communication amongst staff.
