National Wireless Case Study:

Newcastle Art Gallery

Gallery and Urban Spaces Radio Systems

Newcastle Art Gallery is the centre of Newcastle’s art and cultural history. Expanded in 2026 to include an additional 1600 square meters of exhibition space, the gallery is the largest art museum in regional NSW. It boasts a collection of over 7000 works valued at $145 million, and welcomed over 80,000 guests in its first 6 months of reopening.

Due to the sites expanded size, visitor capacity, and state-of-the-art loading dock, the Newcastle Art Gallery required an onsite communication system capable of connecting the front of house team with its wider operations. Coverage would be needed across the site’s multiple floors and 13 gallery spaces. Due to its location in Newcastle CBD, the site would also require private frequency licensing for security purposes. Multiple channels would be needed for the galleries various teams, with a dedicated all broadcast channel capable of priority interrupt and channel pooling for emergency response.

Having previously worked with Civic Theatre Newcastle and Newcastle City Hall, National Wireless was contacted to facilitate the communication installation

National Wireless proposed a fleet of over 20 Hytera HP682 handheld radios. These IP68, large 1.8-inch colour display walkie talkies provide customised channel voice announcement, emergency channel auto-scanning, and AI-based voice enhancement technology operating across 3 distinct channels. Weighing just 280g, the Hytera HP682 displays a light carry-capacity form factor ideal for public facing operations, whilst loud 0.5W audio output ensures the team of Newcastle Art Gallery are able to communicate fluently.

Hytera EH-02 earpieces and ACN-02 lapel microphones were used to keep communications private in the gallery’s customer-facing environment. Belt clips and a multi-unit charger were implemented for fast charging and ease of carrying.

National Wireless assigned 3 channels for the Newcastle Art Gallery – including an “all broadcast” channel capable of interrupting the remaining channels in the event teams need to coordinate staff and members of the public during an emergency. Complete with customised voice announcements, the channels permit teams to communicate across site. Once activated, the all-broadcast channel scans the remaining channels for activity, pooling communications into a single conversation and streamlining site response times.
